"Le Cycle de Mars" #2: wrong introduction + The Master Mind of Mars!

I began to read the second omnibus of Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Cycle de Mars", or more accurately reading it again since the French translation is identical to the Lefrancq edition one from 1995, made by Martine Blond. First of all the introduction give erroneous informations about the last volume of the adventures of John Carter, "John Carter of Mars". The short story "Skeleton Men of Jupiter" is really considered canonical, it's just unfinished. And "John Carter and the Giant of Mars" was not... [Lire la suite]

A hundred years ago: Warlord of Mars!

A hundred years ago in All-Story Magazine, the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, Warlord of Mars, began its 4-parts publication. The faithful readers had only to wait six months to discover what had happened to Dejah Thoris, Thuvia and Phaidor in the Temple of the Sun, where they were locked at the end of Gods of Mars. Thus ended the trilogy which began with A Princess of Mars (1912). Edgar Rice Burroughs will leave on the wayside his hero John Carter to get interested in his descendants: his son Carthoris will be... [Lire la suite]

John Carter has a new fan: Anne Rice!!

Here is what the famous novelist wrote on her Facebook page this day:   "Just watched "John Carter," (2012) based on the John Carter of Mars stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs and starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, and other terrific actors including James Purefoy and Ciarán Hinds. Loved it. Extraordinary film; compelling, coherent, entertaining and satisfying. Actually sort of delightful. Just one of the most fun fantasy films I've seen of late. Why this didn't do well at the box office, I can't fathom. I found it so much... [Lire la suite]

100th visitor for the French version of the blog!

The French version of "At Sister Love's" has welcomed its hundredth visitor today! Time to look at the statistics of the English version: 58 visitors since July 2013. Since my blog is mostly a "throw-it-all" one without a fixed theme, it has no regular visitors, but some random visitors probably directed here by a keyword. Number one topic: the John Carter cosplay! http://normantrayeng.canalblog.com/archives/2013/09/07/27970742.html To be continued!

Viewers' opinions on John Carter on Amazon.fr

The movie has 4.2 stars out of 5 (vs 3.86 for Prometheus, 4.0 for The Hunger Games and 4.4 for The Avengers, not bad!). The last comment was on the 9th of September. Le Cycle de Mars #2... but there's one missing?

I have found on the net a picture of the French edition cover of "Le Cycle de Mars tome 2", who will be published at the end of the year at the Omnibus editions: The cover is in fact the right part of the one featured on the first volume. But what is embarrassing is that the last novel written by Burroughs seems to be missing: John Carter of Mars! So, yes, it was composed of two novelettes, one considered apocryphal, because it was written in fact by the son of Edgar Rice Burroughs (which didn't fool the readers... [Lire la suite]

Awesome John Carter cosplay!

I guess there's not a lot of John Carter cosplay in conventions. Many reasons for that, of course the movie is perhaps not popular enough, but also the costumes are very revealing. There are pneumonia dangers and the risk of being ridiculous of you're not physically fit! So the example below deserves some recognition! John Carter's name is Jim Gillespie, and Dejah Thoris, whose costume combines many concept arts other than the movie's, is "The Chainmail Chick". She has a Facebook page with many examples of cosplay: ... [Lire la suite]

Barsoom novels in a FNAC store in Paris!

I go on a regular basis to the FNAC Store near the “Arc de Triomphe” in Paris, France, and I have noted for several days now that the “Mars Cycle” books of Edgar Rice Burroughs are particularly emphasized in the store. They are presented, cover visible, at four different places in the store!

John Carter: what about the fans in all that?

One of the singular aspects of John Carter is that the movie spontaneously generated many fans, and when I say fans, I say active fans who want as much as possible to militate for the film to have a sequel. The petition has generated nearly 10 000 signatures (it is apparently currently missing only 351 signatures to be sent). The mobilization on Facebook doesn’t seem to falter, more than one year and half after the movie’s release. At the time it was released, if the film actually flopped in the United States, it ended number one in...
