October the 20th: the John Carter rights revert back to ERB inc
Here we are, the annoucement has come, ERB inc got back six months before the official ending all the rights of John Carter, Disney let them go. Of course the annoucement isn't entirely unexpected. John Carter lost a lot of money, even if not as much as what was announced two years ago, but it seems that the rediscovery of the movie by many fans since its release was not enough to convince the Mouse to authorize a sequel.
What does that mean now? ERB inc will now seek another partner to pursue the adventure, under whatever form, remake or sequel.
I am deeply disappointed by those events. I was still hoping, probably in spite of common sense, that Disney would "see the light", and would realize all the profit there will be in doing a sequel.
So, we're back to square one. Square one? Well, not really though. If Andrew Stanton's movie had one benefit, and it's not a small one, it's for having put this universe in the spotlight, since it had never been adapted before. More and more people now know who John Carter is, as well as Barsoom, Dejah Thoris, Woola, and most of the specifics if this world. The movie brought many people to discover the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs. In France, the release of the movie allowed a new printing of the Cycle de Mars novels (even if one, John Carter of Mars, is missing).
So long live John Carter, may he find a suitable home now...
"So long, John, see you next time..."
