A Princess of Mars, not a first edition, but close!
I saw one day a sale on Amazon.fr for the novel "A Princess of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs dated of the year 1917, and for a very small price, it seemed too good to be true! I nonetheless decided to order the item, and a few days later, here it was!
Of course it wasn't a first edition, I didn't expect that anyway, even with the date stated. A Princess of Mars was published for the first time by the A.C. McClurg edition company in 1917. Here we have a Grosset & Dunlap edition, therefore published between 1918 and 1940. Impossible to find to what date exactly, the only date indicated is that of the original copyright of A.C. McClurg, october of 1917!
Fortunately a former owner, if not the first owner, wrote a dedication in it: "presented to Vernon Henriett (last name not guaranteed, I have a hard time decyphering it) by J. AL. Henriett dec 1922". So the book was published between 1918 and 1922. It's by far the oldest book in my collection! The back cover is a little bent, but the binding is still good. It's particularly moving for me to hold this almost centennial book in my hand, one that contains my favorite novel! All that for 13,52€ (some 20$) shipping cost included!
