A hundred years ago: Warlord of Mars!
A hundred years ago in All-Story Magazine, the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, Warlord of Mars, began its 4-parts publication. The faithful readers had only to wait six months to discover what had happened to Dejah Thoris, Thuvia and Phaidor in the Temple of the Sun, where they were locked at the end of Gods of Mars.
Thus ended the trilogy which began with A Princess of Mars (1912). Edgar Rice Burroughs will leave on the wayside his hero John Carter to get interested in his descendants: his son Carthoris will be the hero of Thuvia, Maid of Mars, and his daughter Tara the one of Chessmen of Mars. The next two novels, both excelllent, will leave entirely alone the Carter family.
John Carter will thus stay in the background, making only cameos, or just being mentioned, until the eighth novel, Swords of Mars, when he takes again center stage, to not leave it until the eleventh and last novel. Classic stories to discover as soon as possible, if not done already!
