The Day of the Doctor: Happy Birthday Doctor Who!

Airing event yesterday on France 4, and simultaneously in some 75 countries around the world: the 50th birthday Doctor Who episode. The current Doctor (Matt Smith) meets two of his past incarnations (David Tennant and John Hurt) whose challenge is none other than the end of the Time War which took place before the rebirth of the series in 2005. It is thus like the end of a cycle, a finally solved temporal loop, which opens a new direction for the series. So Gallifrey, the planet of origin of the Doctor, is eventually retroactively saved from the devastations of the Time War, but where is it now? That also relieves the character of the Doctor from the feeling of guilt which had burdened him for 400 years, which is not something negligible for the future of the series. Some random thoughts:

- It’s really a pity that the assigned part for Billie Piper did not enable her to interact with David Tennant. It was nice to have her around, but it was not really believable in the context of the story, why the interface would choose as an incarnation a person whom the Doctor in question didn’t meet yet?

- in the chapter of the regrets, it’s too bad that Christopher Eccleston refused to appear in the episode, to have all the Doctors of the modern era would have been a big plus.

- even if I found the episode overall satisfactory, I find that it was far from reaching the intensity of the 6-minute long prequel “the Night of the Doctor” aired a little before with Paul McGann! And more precisely, since they had Paul McGann at disposal, wouldn't it have been more interesting to also see him confronted to the choices the incarnation he himself chose made?

- a historical appearance of Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor) at the end of the episode!

- an appearance of the eyes (??) of the thirteenth Doctor, Peter Capaldi! He takes over Matt Smith  next month. Since John Hurt is now inserted between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston, he’s normally the last Doctor since in the cannon he can only regenerate 12 times!

Very good episode ultimately, final nice homage to all the Doctors. Recommended for the fans, who in any event won’t need any incentive to watch it. As for the non-Who followers, I am afraid the episode will be a little too obscure for them! Happy birthday, Doctor Who, and good luck for the next 50 years. There is no reason for the adventure to stop any day soon!
